People routinely ask me why I’m a wrestling fan. And on this, the beginning of Wrestlemania weekend, I was thinking about it a lot more. And I’m a wrestling fan for the same reasons that I’m a comic book fan and why I love science fiction and fantasy: I am in love with stories. Particularly stories of Heroes and Villains, Good vs. Evil, etc. But really, I am desperately and irrevocably in love with stories and the telling of stories. Wrestling is the same as comic books which are the same as novels which are the same as sitting in a circle and listening to Homer’s tales of Troy. They are stories. Sometimes they are terrible or infuriating. But sometimes, like Macho Man and Elizabeth at WM 7 or Bret Hart at WM 10 or CM Punk at Money in the Bank 2011 in Chicago, the stories are magical and can change your life. That’s why I love wrestling. Because you never know when the next moment is going to be.
